Kentucky Senator and current U.S. Senate Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday called on Justice Department special counsel to treat former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden equally in investigations into classified documents.
McConnell, who in recent years has confronted Trump blaming him even for the outcome of the midterm congressional elections, has defended the former president, warning prosecutors that they must apply the same standards in investigations, as reported by the newspaper ‘The Hill’.
«I think the important thing with respect to the documents is that these two guys should be treated exactly the same way. Exactly the same way. And I think the attorney general probably did the right thing by having two special counsel,» he has stated.
In recent weeks the White House has confirmed that US authorities have found at least two dozen secret documents in an office and a residence of Biden, dating from the time when he was vice president with Barack Obama.
Biden has reportedly expressed his surprise at the presence of secret documents and has repeatedly stated that he takes the management of official documents seriously, despite the fact that lawyers reportedly found the first documents days before the midterm elections.
This controversy has come months after the FBI had to raid Trump’s Mar-a-Lago, Florida, mansion, where hundreds of secret files were found, some of them stamped ‘top secret’.
The Republican Party has criticized the White House these weeks, denouncing a possible «double standard» in the treatment of Biden. For its part, the White House has criticized the Republicans, accusing them of hypocrisy and of engaging in «political theater».
A spokesman for the White House counsel’s office, Ian Sams, has stressed that «the president and his team have been fully cooperative, acting responsibly and making sure this is handled properly,» while the attitude of the Republicans has been «very different,» engaging in «political stunts.»
