Chinese authorities have raised to thirteen the number of people who have died following a snow avalanche in the Tibet Autonomous Region that occurred earlier in the week.
Emergency services are still, after several days, involved in rescue efforts as an unknown number of people are missing and vehicles are stranded, the ‘China Daily’ newspaper has reported.
The avalanche occurred on Tuesday on a stretch of road at the exit of a tunnel in Mainling county at around 19.00 local time. To the scene, China’s Ministry of Emergency Management has sent several task forces, with more than 1,000 rescuers and 30 vehicles to unblock the roads.
Authorities urged to verify the number of stranded people and vehicles as soon as possible, strengthen the monitoring of the situation and move people to a safe place to prevent secondary disasters, as reported by ‘Global Times’ newspaper.
The regional cabinet, in turn, announced Wednesday that it was taking measures to try to prevent damage from secondary disasters.
