At least one person has died and 38 others have been injured in a new wave of riots and clashes in several parts of Peru during the last day of protests against the government of Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, who took office after the dismissal of former President Pedro Castillo.
The Minister of the Interior, Vicente Romero, has indicated this Friday that a civilian has died when a group of demonstrators tried to storm the Alfredo Rodriguez Airport in Arequipa, in the south of the country. The man has been identified as Juan Carlos Condori Arcana, 30 years old, who was shot in the abdomen.
Romero has thus conveyed his condolences to his family and friends as the national strike against the current Peruvian government and Congress continues in areas such as Lima, La Libertad, Puno, Cuzco, Ica, Arequipa and Lambayeque, among other regions, according to information from the newspaper ‘La República’.
Among the injured, 22 are members of the Peruvian National Police, while another 16 are civilians who were participating in the protests. Romero stressed that, although the demonstrations began peacefully, they have been «developing violently with physical and verbal aggressions against the police, which has led to the use of force».
In addition, he estimated that there is material damage at the airports of Cuzco, Puno and Arequipa. In the latter region, close to 300 people have been detained when trying to force their way into the airport.
For his part, Boluarte announced that investigations would be opened for «acts of violence» during the protests and questioned the real motives of the demonstrators. He has thus applauded the work of the security forces. «Our National Intelligence Directorate is acting with the firmness that corresponds and soon we will be together with the Prosecutor’s Office verifying and opening the prosecutorial files of those people who are generating acts of violence, destruction of private property and of the State», he said.
In this sense, he has branded as «false notifications» the versions about his supposed resignation. «The Government is firm and the Cabinet is more united than ever», he pointed out.
