U.S. President Joe Biden said Thursday that he has «no regrets» about his handling of classified documents from his time as vice president under Barack Obama found in a former office and a home.
«I do not regret anything,» said Biden, who has indicated that he is «following» the guidelines of his legal team. «That’s exactly what we’re doing,» he reiterated.
«When we discovered that a handful of documents were filed in the wrong place, we immediately handed them over to the Archives and the Department of Justice,» explained the U.S. president.
He also predicted that an investigation into the case would find no wrongdoing. «We are cooperating fully and we expect this to be resolved quickly. I think they’re going to find that there’s nothing there,» he said.
Biden expressed his irritation at questions from reporters regarding the document scandal, after being asked about the case during his visit to California on the occasion of the heavy storm that has left several fatalities and damaged infrastructure.
These statements by the U.S. President come at a time when White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre and the Biden Administration’s counsel’s office are facing daily questions about the government’s lack of transparency in failing to disclose the discovery of papers at the Penn Biden Center in November.
Biden’s team confirmed the discovery this month, after CBS reported on it. The first documents were reportedly found by the president’s lawyers on November 2, six days before the midterm congressional elections.
