The President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and the President of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, met this Monday in Buenos Aires with representatives of Human Rights organizations, including the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo and the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo.
At the opening of the meeting, Fernandez praised his Brazilian counterpart stating that there was no need to introduce «those who are all enormous fighters for Human Rights in Argentina, an example of struggle in Latin America and the world», confessing that they asked for a meeting with Lula when they knew he would visit Argentina, as reported by the Télam agency.
For his part, Lula da Silva has pointed out that his trip to Buenos Aires serves to «reestablish the normal relationship between Brazil and Argentina», thanking «the solidarity of Alberto Fernandez» during his imprisonment, a «hard moment for Brazilian democracy».
In this sense, the head of the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo, Estela de Carlotto –also present at a meeting in the Argentine Science Hall of the Casa Rosada– has stressed to Lula that it fills her with pride that today he is the president of «this dear friendly people».
«We wish you the best and may you triumph with all your magnificent ideas to continue embracing us with solidarity and love,» said the head of Abuelas de Mayo, according to the aforementioned agency.
The president of the Peace and Justice Service (Serpaj) and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, considered that «democracies in Latin America are in danger» and that the unity of Brazil, Argentina and the rest of the countries of the continent is necessary».
The meeting was also attended by members of relatives of those detained or disappeared for political reasons during the Argentine military dictatorship, as well as the Center for Legal and Social Studies (CELS) and the Permanent Assembly for Human Rights (Apdh).
