The Tanzanian Police have called for calm to the population following a terrorist alert issued by the US Embassy in the African country about a possible attack in the capital, Dar es Salaam.

«Tanzania is free from any act of terrorism and the country’s security is guaranteed,» said police spokesman David Misime in a statement reported by the newspaper ‘The Citizen’.

The U.S. alert, issued last Wednesday, warned that «places frequented by U.S. citizens and other Westerners in Dar es Salaam and other parts of Tanzania «remain attractive targets for terrorists planning to carry out attacks».

«Terrorist groups could strike with little or no warning, targeting hotels, embassies, restaurants, shopping malls and markets, police stations, places of worship and other places frequented by Westerners,» the U.S. Embassy warned on its website.
