French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday remembered the young Kurdish-Iranian woman Mahsa Amini, who died in the custody of Iranian authorities in September last year for allegedly wearing the Islamic veil incorrectly, as a «martyr» and a «symbol» of human rights following the outbreak of mass protests against her death, both in Iran and abroad.

«Mahsa Amini, killed as a martyr, has today become a symbol for all of us and her struggle obliges us to responsibility and action,» Macron said in a video posted Sunday on his Twitter account on the occasion of the so-called Marianne Initiative, the program launched by the French government to boost the work of humanitarian defenders.

«Repressions in the four corners of the world,» Macron warned, «are on the rise, and often their first victims are women and girls.»

The NGOs Iran Human Rights and Hrana have denounced this weekend that between 488 and 527 people have died during the repression of the protests over the death of the young woman. Iran Human Rights denounces in particular that among the dead there are 64 minors and 39 women, and that at least 107 protesters are currently at risk of execution, death penalty charges or sentences.

The Iranian authorities have exonerated the security forces of any blame for the death of Amini, who died according to their version because of a previous pathology, although they have recognized certain excesses during the repression of demonstrations which they have blamed above all on the action of «rioters» in the pay of foreign powers.
