The spokesman for the United Nations Secretary General, Stephane Dujarric, has called for calm between the United States and China and urged to «reduce the tensions» originated after Washington detected a Chinese spy balloon over its national territory.
Speaking to the media, Dujarric acknowledged that the United Nations is concerned «whenever there is an increase in tensions between China and the United States,» according to CNN news network.
Thus, questioned about the postponement of the trip to Beijing by the U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, Dujarric stressed that it is Washington and Beijing who have to «navigate» this new controversy.
«In this particular incident, obviously the two will have to navigate it. But given the global leadership position of both countries, I think it is incumbent on them to do everything they can to reduce tensions,» he concluded.
The Chinese government confirmed Friday that the balloon located by U.S. authorities in U.S. airspace is its property, although it has clarified that «it is of a civilian nature» and is used for «scientific research».
Therefore, he said that «China regrets that the balloon was diverted into the United States by force majeure» and added that Beijing «will continue to maintain communication with the United States to properly address this unexpected situation, caused by force majeure».
