The President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, signed on Tuesday a decree ordering the delivery of humanitarian aid to Turkey to deal with the effects of the strong earthquakes registered on Monday, which have killed more than 5,000 people on Turkish and Syrian territory.
Zelenski has thus indicated that he has decided to deliver aid to Turkey as soon as possible to «help the population to overcome the emergency situation caused by the earthquakes and in accordance with Article 10 of the Law on Humanitarian Aid of Ukraine», as indicated by the Presidency in a statement.
The decree leaves it up to the Cabinet to take the necessary measures for the provision of this aid to become effective. On Monday, shortly after the first death toll figures became known, the Ukrainian government already expressed its readiness to offer assistance to Turkey.
Thus, it expressed its «sincere condolences» to its Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. «I wish a speedy recovery to all the victims. In these difficult times, we will be close to the Turkish people. We are ready to give the necessary help to overcome the consequences of this disaster,» he said at the time.
