The Romanian Air Force on Wednesday received a second battery of Patriot missile systems from the United States as part of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Defense Minister Angel Tilvar said that this is the second package of a total of four scheduled to arrive in the country by next April. «The second Patriot system of the four contracted from the United States has arrived according to schedule. The supply of the third and fourth began in 2022,» he said in a ministry statement.
The contract calls for the procurement of seven new production Patriot systems. Spare parts, ammunition and training of personnel to operate the equipment are included.
The first Patriot system was delivered in 2020 and, as of 2021, will be used for air defense tasks in Romanian airspace. Tilvar has also indicated that these systems are of particular relevance for Romania’s defense.
«Equipping the Air Force with Patriot systems adds a robust, credible and flexible air defense capability designed to help fulfill the Romanian Army’s missions. The four deliveries represent the first stage in achieving a state-of-the-art defense,» he asserted.
