Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski met tonight at the Elysee Palace in Paris with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who traveled from Berlin for a three-way meeting to reaffirm support for Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion «as long as necessary.»
The meeting, which took place hours after the Ukrainian leader visited the ‘premier’ Rishi Sunak in London, was followed by a joint press appearance in which Macron and Scholz took the opportunity to reaffirm their support for Ukraine, as reported by the French channel BFM TV.
«We stand by Ukraine’s side, with firmness and with the determination to accompany it until victory,» the French president asserted, affirming that together they want to build «a peace that does justice to Ukraine, to its people, to its courage (…) and that allows to build a space of security for all.»
Scholz, for his part, promised that Germany will continue to provide military aid to Ukraine «as long as necessary», stressing that «Russia should not win this war», according to DPA agency.
Zelenski then took the floor to acknowledge feeling grateful and «happy» to be able to be in Paris with two of the main European leaders, and stressed that the meeting will serve to strengthen «continental unity».
Likewise, as he had done hours before in London, the Ukrainian president called on his interlocutors to send «as soon as possible» fighter planes to strengthen the Ukrainian army’s capabilities in the air battles against Russia.
On the sidelines of a working dinner held with Scholz and Macron, Zelenski received the commemoration of the French Legion of Honor from the French President, who said that it was a «tribute» to Ukraine and its people, but especially to his Ukrainian counterpart for his «courage and commitment».
The Ukrainian president visited London on Thursday, where he met not only the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, but also King Charles III. This small European tour of Zelenski comes in the context of his more than likely participation in the European Union summit this Thursday in Brussels.
