The Organization of American States (OAS) has welcomed the fact that 222 people can «breathe free» after the Nicaraguan government deported prisoners, saying that their freedom is a demonstration of the strength of international pressure on dictatorships.
Since Thursday 222 people can «breathe in freedom», according to the OAS, which says that, however, there is still a long way to go until all Nicaraguans, without exception, «can once again enjoy freedom in their own country».
«The freedom of these political prisoners is also a demonstration that international pressure is essential against dictatorships,» reads a statement from the organization, released Thursday.
The OAS also noted that the efforts of the Biden Administration «are an example of effective political work in favor of Human Rights». It also applauded «the role played» by the United States in the operation, which has welcomed the prisoners and provided them with transportation.
The Inter-American organization, however, affirmed that what happened today is not a «liberation», since the prisoners were «unjustly imprisoned», tortured and isolated from the outside world for thinking, expressing or writing their opinions contrary to the «regime» prevailing in Nicaragua.
Those released from prison will now be sentenced in trials «without any guarantees», the OAS recalls, for alleged treason and «incitement to violence, terrorism and economic destabilization», among other alleged crimes. In addition, they have been stripped of their Nicaraguan nationality and all their citizenship rights «in perpetuity». They arrive in the United States «deported» from their own country.
For this reason, the OAS has asked that the crimes against the now ex-prisoners not go unpunished and that their rights be restored «as soon as possible», bringing to light all the people who are still being imprisoned and tortured in the Central American country.
«The Nicaraguan regime continues to be alien to the principles of democracy and respect for human rights, and we must continue to denounce its abuses,» said the organization.
In this sense, it reiterated that the path for Nicaragua «is clear», stressing the importance of returning «to democracy, to democratic institutions, to respect for the fundamental rights of Nicaraguans and to convene free and fair elections, with international observation».
