The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced this Saturday, coinciding with the visit of Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, that his country will lead a movement against the sanctions and blockade imposed on Cuba by the United States and its allies.
«Mexico will lead a more active movement for all countries to unite and defend Cuba’s independence and sovereignty. Nothing about treating Cuba as a terrorist country or putting them on the blacklist of alleged terrorist countries. Cuba is a people and a profoundly humane government, long live the dignified people of Cuba,» announced López Obrador after presenting the Order of the Aztec Eagle decoration to Díaz-Canel.
Thus, the Mexican president has made a «respectful» appeal to the United States to lift «as soon as possible» the economic and financial blockade against the Caribbean island. «Nothing about treating them as a terrorist country or putting them on the blacklist of alleged terrorist countries. Cuba is a deeply humane people and government, long live the dignified people of Cuba,» he added.
López Obrador pointed out during an act at the altar of the great acropolis of the archaeological zone of Edzná that it is time for a new coexistence among all the countries of America and pointed out that the current model «is exhausted, anachronistic and has no future because it does not benefit anyone».
«And as a sign of good will and as a sign that we are ready to unite all the countries of the Americas, I consider and I express it with respect that the government of the United States should, as soon as possible, lift the unjust and inhumane blockade against the people of Cuba», he said.
The Mexican president quoted George Washington: «Let them not forget what Washington said: nations should not take advantage of the misfortune of other peoples».
«We must put aside the disjunctive that was imposed to integrate ourselves to the United States or to oppose it in a courageous or defensive way. It is time to express and explore another option: that of dialoguing with the leaders of all countries and especially with the U.S. leaders and convince and persuade them that a new relationship between the countries of our continent and all America is possible,» he argued.
López Obrador closed his speech with a harangue in favor of Mexico and Cuba: «Long live free and sovereign Cuba! Long live our America! Long live universal fraternity! Long live Mexico! Long live Mexico! Long live Mexico!».
For his part, Díaz-Canel celebrated Mexico’s historic support to Cuba in favor of lifting the blockade, «mainly to the economy and the health sector», a sector especially affected by «this criminal policy that did not grant pause or mercy in the most complex moments of the pandemic».
In addition, he celebrated the collaboration between the two countries, to which Cuba goes without hesitation «to collaborate with this brotherly people». «Doctors are joining this country to guarantee quality services to populations that have never had access to health care or could hardly have access to it, to continue strengthening bilateral ties in the field of health», he emphasized.
