The Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, began his visit to the Syrian city of Aleppo on Saturday accompanied by a convoy of nearly 40 tons of material to attend to the victims of the earthquake that has devastated a large part of the northwest of the country.
«We have brought between 35 and 37 tons of medical and health supplies,» explained the WHO director general upon his arrival at Aleppo airport, in statements reported by the official Syrian news agency, SANA.
A second plane will arrive in Syria in the next two days, with about 30 tons of medical supplies for minor surgeries, he added in the company of the Syrian Minister of Health, Hassan Ghabbach.
The health minister has promised to coordinate with WHO to determine the exact extent of the damage and to assess the material needed to reactivate the minimum care services, absolutely devastated by the earthquake, which has left in Syria and Turkey so far 24,500 dead, including more than 3,000 in the Arab republic.
