The Syrian government has opened the Bab al Salam and Al Raee border crossings for a period of three months to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid into the country.

The UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, has announced in a statement the measure adopted by Damascus in a statement in which he emphasizes that it will allow access to the victims of the earthquake that has left more than 40,000 victims on both sides of the border.

These crossings are located on the border between Turkey and Syria, in northwestern Syria. «As the death toll from the February 6 earthquake continues to rise the delivery of food, health, nutrition, protection, shelter, winter and other vital supplies to the millions affected is the main urgency,» Guterres stressed.

The opening of these border crossings to facilitate humanitarian access, speed up visa approvals and facilitate movement between logistical hubs will allow more aid to enter faster, the UN official stressed.

The latest official Turkish death toll puts the death toll from the earthquakes at 31,634, while in Syria the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has reported 9,300 dead, bringing the total to more than 40,000.
