
A 44-year-old woman and her 21-year-old daughter were killed Monday in a fire in a thatched hut during the eviction of hundreds of villagers from occupied land in Kanpur Dehat village in Uttar Pradesh, India.
Pramila and her daughter Neha were trapped inside the house during the eviction, according to the neighbors themselves and according to NDTV television channel.
The eviction operation began on Monday morning under the orders of Judge Gyaneshwar Prasad and at the request of the owner of the occupied land.
The bulldozer demolished several huts erected by the squatters, including the one in which the two deceased women lived. The husband and father of the deceased suffered severe burns while trying to rescue them.
After hearing the news, hundreds of neighbors attacked the eviction team with bricks, which had to leave the area. The police have sent reinforcements in the face of the growing tension.
