The Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, one of Peru’s main tourist attractions, reopened on Wednesday, more than three weeks after authorities blocked access to the area due to protests against the government of Dina Boluarte.
The intensification of the mobilizations led on January 21 to a new closure of this enclave and, although the rail service in the area had already resumed last week, access to Machu Picchu has remained closed until Wednesday.
The Ministry of Culture has confirmed in a statement the commitment of all institutions and organizations «to ensure the safety of the monument and transport services, so that visitors can enjoy the experience of the visit».
«This decision responds to the need to bet on dialogue and peace, in the framework of the articulated work between the authorities and the population, which require the resumption of cultural activity and the economic reactivation of Cuzco,» the Ministry has emphasized.
More than 2,000 tourists visited Machu Picchu every day before the protests, so its opening is key for the economy of the area. The Peruvian government has called on tourists to continue traveling to the South American country despite the unrest, after several countries have recommended extreme caution.
