Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Monday granted a pardon to more than 80,000 prisoners, including people detained during the crackdown on protests that erupted in September 2022 over the death in custody of young Kurdish-Iranian woman Mahsa Amini, arrested for allegedly wearing the veil incorrectly.

The head of the Iranian judicial apparatus, Gholamhosein Mohseni-Ejei, has indicated that the total number of people who could benefit from this measure could reach 90,000, before stressing that it will not affect people convicted as a result of »private complaints», according to the Iranian news agency IRNA.

Various opponents have indicated that the amnesties and pardons recently announced by the authorities seek to appease the demonstrators, after a harsh repression of the demonstrations and the sentences issued against some of the detainees, including death sentences.

The Iranian authorities have exonerated the security forces of any blame for Amini’s death, although they have acknowledged certain excesses during the repression of the protests, which have resulted in nearly 500 deaths, according to figures provided by several non-governmental organizations.
