The Belarusian government confirmed Friday that President Alexander Lukashenko will travel to Iran on Sunday as part of a short state visit that will take him to meet with his Iranian counterpart, Ebrahim Raisi.

The main topic to be discussed between the two leaders will be bilateral development, with emphasis on trade and economic cooperation, as well as issues related to industry, agriculture and transport, BelTA agency reports.

Iran and Belarus have emerged in recent months as one of Russia’s few allies in the context of the war, and Raisi and Lukashenko plan to discuss the current situation in the region.

One of the main central events of Lukashenko’s visit to Iran is the signing of a ‘road map’ for comprehensive cooperation between Minsk and Tehran. The Belarusian president will also meet with Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The two leaders already held a meeting in mid-September during the summit in Samarkand (Uzbekistan) of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), an intergovernmental body made up of nine countries of the Asian continent. Already on that occasion, Lukashenko and Raisi instructed their foreign ministers to review and intensify diplomatic relations.
