The Japanese government has withdrawn the mandatory use of facemasks as a generic rule due to the coronavirus pandemic as of Monday.
However, it maintains the recommendation to use masks on specific occasions such as health care facilities or in crowded buses or trains, reports the Japanese public television NHK. The aim is to avoid contagion among older people or those at risk of severe symptoms.
The regulatory change includes a media campaign, TV commercials and other means to explain when and where the use of masks is recommended.
COVID-19 is now labeled as a level two infectious disease, the second highest level, while as of May 8 it will drop to category five, the lowest.
