Thailand’s government on Wednesday endorsed an extradition treaty with Russia, a move that has been put on the table as citizens arrive in the Asian country from Russia in a bid to avoid being recruited as part of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The treaty, according to officials, seeks to »increase cooperation in tackling criminality». Government spokeswoman, Rachada Dhnadirek, has pointed out that this treaty »is in line» with those reached with other countries.
Thus, she specified that the pact does not require the approval of the Parliament since it »does not affect Thailand’s territory, economy, society or trade and investment», according to information from the newspaper »The Nation».
Thousands of Russians are trying to avoid conscription and, since the start of the war, many of them have moved to Thailand. In February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the Justice Ministry to sign an extradition agreement with Thailand.
