North Korea has confirmed through its official news agency (KCNA) that the launch of a continental ballistic missile this Thursday 16 was in response to »provocative and invasive large-scale war drills by the U.S. and South Korean puppets».

The country already confirmed responsibility for the launch of the Hwaseongpo-17 missile from Pyongyang International Airport just hours before South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida met in Tokyo to improve the troubled relations between the two countries.

The North Korean country has now accused South Korea of worsening »a serious situation in the most unstable security environment on the Korean peninsula», on the occasion of the joint military exercises that Washington and Seoul are carrying out during these days, in the longest military maneuvers carried out by both countries.

The United States, which on Tuesday condemned this and other recent launches by North Korea, has reiterated its support for South Korea. In a conversation between Assistant Secretary of State Wendy Sherman and South Korea’s First Vice Foreign Minister Cho Hyundong, both countries condemned the North Korean country’s »provocative actions».

In addition, Sherman reiterated the »unwavering commitment» of the United States to the defense of South Korea.

This latest launch came two days after Pyongyang launched two more short-range ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan, and is the third in the space of a week.
