A supporter of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and a supporter of former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva have shot each other dead at a birthday party in the Brazilian town of Foz do Iguaçu, a town bordering Paraguay and Argentina, in the midst of the presidential election campaign.
Bolsonaro’s militant entered a birthday party and shot at the guard Marcelo Arruda, a municipal leader of the Workers’ Party (PT) and supporter of Lula da Silva, Arruda fired back at his assailant and both died.
«Our comrade Marcelo Arruda celebrated his 50th birthday with his family and friends, in peace, in Foz do Iguaçu. Affiliated to the Workers’ Party, his party had as its theme the PT and hope for the future; with the joy of a father who has just had another daughter,» Lula da Silva lamented on his Twitter account.
The Brazilian Police has described what happened as an episode of «political intolerance», as reported by the Brazilian newspaper ‘Estadao’.
Similarly, the PT has stressed: «we do not need threats or hatred. We need construction, peace and solidarity».
For his part, Bolsonaro stressed on his Twitter account: «the authorities must seriously investigate what happened and take all appropriate measures, as well as go against the slanderers who act like vultures to try to harm us 24 hours a day».
The event occurred less than 90 days before the presidential elections, in which the Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, is still far from being the first choice among Brazilians and Lula da Silva is the favorite.
