Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland has explained that she has conveyed to the Russian delegation participating in last week’s G-20 finance ministers’ meeting that she believes Russian President Vladimir Putin’s economic advisors could be responsible for collaboration with war crimes.

«Russia’s technocrats working to finance Putin’s war machine are personally complicit in Russia’s war crimes, just as Putin’s generals are,» Freeland said, as reported by Bloomberg news agency.

Thus, Freeland has criticized the participation of the Russian delegation in the meeting in Bali, Indonesia. «Russia’s presence at this meeting is like inviting an arsonist to a meeting of firefighters. Russia is directly responsible for the illegal invasion of Ukraine and its economic consequences, which we are all feeling,» she has told the press during the trip back to Canada.

All the delegates stayed in the room when the Russian representation took the floor on the first day, while at the last G-20 meeting there was a general walkout led by the United States. The meeting concluded with the usual statement noting the division over the war.

On the other hand, Freeland has pointed out that the fight against the record inflation of the last four decades is primarily a central bank fight. «The job of ensuring that inflation is on target rests primarily with the Bank of Canada. We respect the independence of the Bank of Canada and we are confident that it has the tools and the know-how to do its job,» she said.
