Chinese authorities have assured Wednesday that they are «closer than ever» in their history to achieving «total reunification» with Taiwan, days after the end of the last Communist Party Congress in which the president, Xi Jinping, was given another five years in office.

«We are closer than ever in our history, and we are more confident and capable than ever, of achieving national rejuvenation,» Taiwan Affairs Office spokesman Ma Xiaoguang has emphasized from Beijing.

In this sense, Ma assured that they are «closer than ever in history, as well as more confident and capable of achieving the complete reunification of the homeland», in response to questions about President Xi’s loudly applauded words on Taiwan during his speech at that Congress.

«The wheels of history are turning toward the reunification of China,» said Xi, who affirmed that this process will «undoubtedly» take place, although he did not specify when, according to Bloomberg news agency.

The Communist Party of China elected on Saturday the new composition of the Central Committee and its highest leadership bodies during the farewell and closing of its 20th National Congress, marked by the departure under escort of former President Hu Jintao in full session, under the undaunted gaze of his successor Xi Jinping, who is heading for a historic third consecutive term.

At that meeting, China stressed its «firm» opposition to Taiwan’s independence, as well as its proposed model for the island based on «one country, two systems».
