The sister-in-law of Peru’s President Pedro Castillo, Yenifer Paredes, was released from prison on Tuesday after the country’s justice system revoked on Monday the preventive detention imposed against her, allowing her to face the process for which she is accused of corruption in freedom.

The sister of the Peruvian first lady has left the women’s prison of Chorrillos, in the province of Lima, accompanied by her lawyer José Dionisio, and followed by dozens of journalists who asked her questions about the criminal proceedings she is facing, as shown in a video released by the Peruvian newspaper ‘La República’.

Paredes has been released after almost two months in the prison after the Attorney General’s Office asked the Judiciary to remand her in custody, alleging that she was a flight risk.

The only restriction Paredes will have to face will be to appear punctually before the authorities of the Judiciary or the Prosecutor’s Office when required, as ruled by Peru’s second criminal appeals court and reported by RPP radio station.

The sister of the Peruvian first lady is being investigated after a video was disseminated in which she is seen allegedly offering a sanitation work to the residents of the community of Succha, according to the aforementioned radio station.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office has indicated on several occasions that Paredes would be the main lobbyist in an alleged criminal organization that would be led by the president himself, Pedro Castillo.

THE PROSECUTOR’S OFFICE APPEALS PAREDES’ RELEASE The Peruvian Attorney General’s Office has announced that it will file a cassation appeal against the court decision revoking the preventive detention of Pedro Castillo’s sister-in-law and ordering her release from prison.

Specifically, the appeal will be presented before the Peruvian Supreme Court, justifying that the appeal is necessary due to the «dangerousness» and «obstruction» of the decision taken by the Judiciary, as reported by ‘Diario Corre’.

«We are going to present a cassation. The Public Prosecutor’s Office is going to present an appeal so that in the Supreme Court we can have a better criterion regarding the dangerousness and the obstruction that, for us, has been evident in the case of Yenifer Paredes,» said prosecutor Jorge Garcia to the press.

«What was analyzed yesterday is the dangerousness that, according to the criteria of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, even though we respect the independent decision of the Judiciary, we consider this criterion to be wrong (…) we have the constitutional right to criticize the judicial sentence», he added.
