Karen National Union (KNU) rebels seized a Burma Army base in the town of Kyarinseikgyi on Thursday and captured 17 soldiers who surrendered after a series of clashes.
A UNK colonel has indicated that the base has fallen after an attack carried out by the rebels against a military post in Kwee Lone Taing, according to the newspaper ‘The Irrawaddy’.
The offensive was carried out by three rebel battalions, which have managed to face the counter-offensive of the Burmese junta’s military. In total, the soldiers have surrendered 43 weapons and ammunition.
On Wednesday morning, rebel troops and resistance groups attacked another military checkpoint on a road generally used by civilians who, according to the UNK, have been victims of extortion by the military.
Last week they launched a major operation against Burmese military forces stationed in the town of Kawkareik, near the northern border with Thailand, which resulted in heavy shelling.
Burma has been under the control of a military coup junta since February last year, which decided to seize power by force after rejecting the results of the elections held in November 2020 in the Asian country.
