The Government of El Salvador announced on Friday that a total of 56,000 gang members have been arrested since the decree of a state of emergency, a mechanism that allows the Salvadoran State to suspend certain freedoms and guarantees.

This was detailed by the Presidency of El Salvador, which has described as «irrefutable» the results achieved after the implementation of the measure by order of the country’s president, Nayib Bukele.

«The results of the security strategy implemented by the Government of President Nayib Bukele are irrefutable. So far under the emergency regime, the security forces have captured more than 56,000 gang members,» the Presidency’s press office reported in a message on Twitter.

Likewise, the Executive of El Salvador has praised the administration of the president claiming that the state is now «the safest country in the world», a fact that would have been possible thanks to «public policies in favor of the Salvadoran population».

«The historic results of the war against gangs lay the foundations of a new El Salvador that we are building, a country where Salvadorans can walk safely anywhere in the territory,» reads another message on the social network of the Presidency, underlining that the country has been 227 homicide-free.

Bukele, who will run for reelection in 2024, has defended the state of emergency as a key instrument of his security plan, in the face of human rights organizations that question the excessive powers granted to the security forces by this regime.
