Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki reported Friday that Poland and the United States have signed an agreement that establishes the U.S. company Westinghouse as responsible for the future construction of a nuclear power plant in the country.

«A strong Poland-U.S. partnership guarantees the success of our joint initiatives. After talks with (U.S.) Vice President Kamala Harris, and Secretary Jennifer Granholm, we confirmed that our nuclear power project will use Westinghouse Nuclear’s reliable and safe technology,» he confirmed on his Twitter profile.

Said project, which involves the US company Westinghouse, includes the construction of a nuclear power plant in the province of Pomerania, which will begin in 2026 and is scheduled for completion in 2033, as reported by the ‘Rzeczpospolita’ newspaper.

After Warsaw kept its initiative to build a nuclear power plant in a drawer for years, the war in Ukraine, coupled with the energy crisis and the lack of gas supply, has put this initiative back on the table.

The U.S. company Westinghouse Electric already announced in March 2021 its intentions to invest in this type of technology in Poland. According to the 2020 Nuclear Energy Program (PPEJ), the authorities plan to build plants of six to ten gigawatts in the country.

Nuclear power, as recalled by Bloomberg, will provide stable electricity for Poland, which also plans to build offshore wind farms and invest in solar power in its aim to reach the EU’s goal of zero net emissions by 2050.
