Honduran authorities have asked the United States for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for the country given the impossibility of returning Honduran migrants in a «dignified» manner and in a «democratic, prosperous and safe» environment.

«This will mean an important relief while we manage to attack and confront these delicate situations,» the Honduran Foreign Ministry explained in a letter addressed to the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas.

In this sense, Tegucigalpa has argued that the return of «a significant number of people» could translate into «more unemployment, more violence, more food insecurity, fewer opportunities for people currently living in Honduras and most likely more irregular immigration.»

Honduras has also praised the U.S. immigration capacity, while highlighting «the strong bilateral agenda» between the two countries. «From the first day she took office, President Xiomara Castro has been forceful (…) (in) attacking criminal structures, dismantling networks of corruption and impunity,» he said.

However, the Foreign Ministry recalled in its letter to Mayorkas, posted on her Facebook profile, that President Castro’s ambitious plan requires time and commitment from all Hondurans to make it a reality».
