The Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, has announced that her husband, Paul, will face a «long recovery process» after suffering an attack at his private home in San Francisco.
«Paul is making steady progress in what will be a long recovery process,» Pelosi remarked in a post on her Twitter profile, where she thanked the expressions of affection received since the incident.
Paul Pelosi, 82, was attacked last Friday at his home by David DePape, who has been identified as the alleged perpetrator. The U.S. Department of Justice has already reported that DePape has been charged with assault and attempted kidnapping.
Pelosi’s husband was injured after being hit with a hammer, although the main target of the assailant was the Speaker of the House herself, who was not at home at the time, so the area around the house did not have the usual security detail.
DePape now faces a sentence ranging from 13 years in prison to life imprisonment. He is expected to appear in state court for arraignment this Tuesday. The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office has indicated that the incident may be politically motivated.
Paul Pelosi underwent «successful» surgery to repair a fractured skull and serious injuries to his right arm and hands after the assailant, hammer in hand, asked him where his wife was and assaulted him.
