The Russian Foreign Ministry has assured that the use of nuclear weapons would be justified in the event of being the target of a hypothetical attack by foreign powers that would endanger its existence.

According to the Russian diplomatic portfolio in a statement, the country’s nuclear protocol stipulates that the hypothetical use of atomic weapons would in any case be for defensive purposes and in response to attacks «of weapons of mass destruction or an aggression with the use of conventional weapons» that endanger its own existence as a State.

«Russian doctrinal approaches in this regard are defined with the utmost precision» and do not give rise to «an expansive interpretation», Moscow has reaffirmed, stressing that its Army is «strictly and consistently guided by the principle that in a nuclear war there can be no winners and it should never be unleashed».

Thus, Russia stressed that, as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and as one of the world’s nuclear powers, it has a «special responsibility» to strengthen international security and stability.

«We call on the remaining five nuclear-armed countries to demonstrate in practice their readiness to work to resolve this priority task and to abandon dangerous attempts to infringe on the vital interests of others, staying out of direct armed conflict and encouraging provocations with weapons of mass destruction,» the statement reads.

This statement by Moscow comes in a context marked by Russia’s accusations about the possible use of a dirty bomb by Ukraine, something that the United States and much of the international community have interpreted rather as the prelude to a false flag attack by Russian troops.
