The agreement reached in 2018 between the United States and Mexico on civil nuclear cooperation entered into force on Thursday, after which Washington has extolled that it will «enhance cooperation at the energy security level» and «strengthen the diplomatic and economic relationship» at the bilateral level.
«It is the first bilateral agreement for peaceful nuclear cooperation between the United States and Mexico,» said a U.S. State Department spokesperson, who emphasized that it is «another step in the nearly 80 years of civil nuclear cooperation between the two countries.»
Thus, he defended that the agreement «establishes the conditions for continued civil nuclear trade with Mexico» and explained that this type of agreement «provides a legal framework for the export of nuclear material, equipment and components from the United States to other countries».
Therefore, he pointed out that «this agreement provides a comprehensive framework for peaceful nuclear cooperation with Mexico based on a mutual commitment to non-proliferation» and that «it will allow the transfer of nuclear material, equipment, including reactors, components and information for nuclear research and nuclear energy production».
Mexico highlighted in 2018 after signing the agreement that it gives the country access to technologies that «will allow it to continue boosting the productive and social development sectors», while assuring that the pact «responds to the country’s interest in strengthening its nuclear sector in a safe and secure manner».
«In particular, the agreement grants legal certainty and strengthens our bilateral cooperation in the development and international use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and preserving the environment,» said the Mexican Foreign Ministry, which also argued that the agreement facilitates and expands the exchange of information, technology, equipment, materials, services and best practices in public policy and regulation «for the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.»
