Russian and Ukrainian forces will exchange more than 200 prisoners, 107 for each of the two sides, in a new exchange that adds to those carried out in recent months in the war that broke out in February with the invasion ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The agreement has been advanced by the head of the pro-Russian administration of Donetsk, Denis Pushilin, who has identified the «majority» of the beneficiaries as military. Of these prisoners, 65 are from the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, according to the Interfax news agency.
Despite the escalation of tensions, the parties have regularly agreed to such exchanges, thanks to which hundreds of people captured during the conflict have been able to regain their freedom. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has repeatedly demanded access to detainees and guarantees of their rights.
