The European Union on Friday condemned the assassination attempt on Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Jan and praised the Islamabad authorities’ call for a «full and independent» investigation to shed light on the episode.
«We strongly condemn the attack on the former prime minister and his supporters and welcome the government’s call for a full and independent investigation,» EU foreign affairs spokeswoman Nabila Massrali said at a press conference from Brussels.
In this regard, she stressed that any form of violence is «unacceptable» and «undermines democracy», and called on the parties in Pakistan to avoid any act of intimidation or violence that aggravates the situation.
Jan was shot and injured in the leg during an anti-government protest in the Punjab region.
