The president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, has extended to the province of Santo Domingo de Tsáchilas the state of emergency decreed last Tuesday in Guayas and Esmeraldas in response to the violence unleashed there, where deaths and injuries have been confirmed in the context of protests over the transfer of prisoners.
Thus, Santo Domingo de Tsáchilas adheres to the curfew imposed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. (local time), as well as other types of security and control measures provided for in the state of emergency.
«The National Government will undertake all necessary decisions to safeguard peace in the country and will fight head-on against terrorism and organized crime,» the General Secretariat of Communication of Ecuador said on its social networks.
For his part, Lasso assured on Thursday that he had kept his word to apply strict measures against the recent episodes of violence registered in the country’s largest prison by transferring hundreds of inmates.
Ecuador has been for several days the scene of a series of violent acts in the provinces of Guayas and Esmeraldas that have resulted in the death of at least five policemen and for which more than 50 suspects have already been arrested, three of them in custody.
