Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has asked Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial to set up a judicial commission of inquiry into the assassination attempt on opposition leader Imran Jan.

«The chief justice should form a full judicial commission to put an end to this chaos and evil. If my request is not heeded there will be doubts in the future,» Sharif said from Lahore in a press conference reported by Geo TV.

«I will appear in court any time I am asked to do so,» he added in response to Jan’s accusations of government and army involvement in the assassination attempt.

«You have accused the prime minister, the interior minister and a military officer. I will resign from politics if it is proved that I was involved in this conspiracy,» Sharif added.

The Pakistani leader has taken the opportunity to condemn the attack, in which Jan was shot in the leg during a rally in Punjab during his «long march» on Islamabad to demand the resignation of the government. Jan has blamed Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and a general of the secret services.

A suspect was arrested immediately after the attack and has reportedly confessed to shooting Jan with the intention of killing him, which has not stopped protests and demonstrations for the third consecutive day across the country. Police have used tear gas and arrested dozens of protesters.
