At least 306 people have been murdered in Mexico in the last week, coinciding with the Day of the Dead, according to a report prepared by the country’s Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, which puts the number of daily victims of intentional homicide at 76.5 between November 1 and 4.

According to the report, Baja California, Chihuahua, Guanajuato, State of Mexico, Michoacán and Mexico City are the most violent states during the first days of this month.

In Chichuahua, in the northeast of the country, has registered the record number of murders in a single day, reaching 15 on Thursday, while Baja California, which borders the United States, has added up to 40 homicides in this period of time.

Precisely this Thursday, the Mexican Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, affirmed that his country is suffering an «arms pandemic» and described as «essential» the control of trafficking from other states to Mexico.

During his speech at an international conference on the business of arms trafficking to Mexico, Ebrard showed a map of the country detailing the main municipalities in which weapons have been seized since 2020 and highlighting those bordering the United States, where there is a higher incidence.

According to government data, Mexico is the fifth country with the most unregistered firearms in the world. In addition, conversations on the issues of gun violence, gun trafficking and the responsibility of gun companies are «still incipient» in the civil service, education and media.
