The presidents of France, Emmanuel Macron, and Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, held a brief conversation on Monday in Sharm el Sheikh, the Egyptian city hosting the 27th UN Climate Change Conference (COP27).

Maduro and Macron met in one of the corridors of the climate summit and shook hands at length. During the handshake, Macron expressed his wish «that we could talk a little more and start a bilateral work that would be useful for the country and the region». He also pointed out that «the (European) continent is getting back together».

They also talked about the bilateral cooperation agenda between Venezuela and France, as well as the actions to combat climate change, according to the TeleSur channel.

This Sunday it has transpired that next week the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, and the presidents of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador; Chile, Gabriel Boric, and Argentina, Alberto Fernández will meet in Paris under the auspices of the French president, Emmanuel Macron, as facilitators of the dialogue between the government of Maduro and the opposition.

Representatives of the Venezuelan government and the opposition could also participate in this meeting to address the situation and gather proposals to restart contacts in Mexico and seek a negotiated solution to the Venezuelan political crisis.

Maduro also met on Monday with the President of Suriname, Chan Santhoki, and with the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne, according to the Venezuelan Presidency.
