A court in Russia’s capital, Moscow, has extended until November 26 the detention of opposition leader Ilya Yashin, arrested since mid-year for allegedly spreading false information about the Russian Armed Forces in the context of the war in Ukraine.

Yashin, one of the few politicians who has spoken out against the war in Ukraine, has been under administrative arrest in a detention center since early July, as the Interfax news agency reported at the time.

The penalties for the crime of disseminating false information about the Armed Forces range from five to ten years in prison. The courts have accused Yashin of publishing false information about the events in Bucha.

The Russian authorities have already completed the investigation of the case and sent the findings to the Prosecutor’s Office for approval of the indictment and forwarding it to the court. The accused and his team of lawyers will soon learn the results of the investigation, according to TASS news agency.

A Moscow court has already sentenced Yashin to a fine of 90,000 rubles (just under 1,500 euros) for discrediting the work of the Russian Armed Forces in Ukraine. A repetition of this offense could result in criminal prosecution.
