Sarah Matthews, a former advisor to former U.S. President Donald Trump, said Wednesday that the results of the U.S. midterm elections «are the best indicator» that the former president should not run for office in 2024.

«I think last night is the best indicator that Donald Trump should not be the Republican candidate in 2024,» said Matthews, who was deputy White House spokesman during Trump’s term, as reported by the US television network CNN.

Thus, he argued that the former president has caused the Republicans to lose «seats that could win» by his decision to «push candidates of poor quality».

«There is a record inflation, an increase in fear of crime, the worst border crisis in history and an unpopular president and the performance of the Republicans has still been disappointing,» he said.

In this sense, he has emphasized that «this has been largely due to Trump-backed candidates.» «They were not of sufficient quality. I think this is a lesson learned for Republicans. Point number one, Trump is not a winner and, point number two, the quality of the candidates matters,» he concluded.

The results of the ‘midterm’ reflect for now an even race for the Senate, where Democrats start as favorites to maintain control of the body, and put Republicans in advantage in the House of Representatives, albeit with a smaller margin than expected in the polls.
