North Korea fired another unidentified ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan, known in Korea as the East Sea, the South Korean military said Wednesday.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff of the South Korean Army has denounced this «provocation», without giving further details on the type of projectile or the trajectory of the same, amid the spike in tensions in the area in recent weeks, as reported by the South Korean news agency Yonhap.

During the day, the South Korean Army has also indicated that the missile fired last week by Pyongyang that flew over the maritime border was a ‘SA-5’, similar to one used by Russia in the framework of the war in Ukraine, after the analysis of the remains located in the area.

Military sources have stressed that these remains show letters in Cyrillic, although they have emphasized that «it cannot be confirmed if the missile is of Russian manufacture», opening the door to the possibility that North Korea had assembled parts imported and developed during the Soviet Union era.

For its part, the South Korean Defense Ministry has «strongly» condemned last week’s launch and stressed that Seoul «will not tolerate any North Korean provocation that poses a threat to the lives and safety of citizens.»

The ministry warned that South Korea «will confront with the overwhelming capabilities it has, based on the alliance between Seoul and Washington,» after North Korea has fired dozens of missiles and projectiles into the Sea of Japan in recent weeks.

Washington, as well as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), have shared their warnings that North Korea is «likely» to conduct a nuclear missile test, its first since 2017.
