The President of Chile, Gabriel Boric – PRESIDENCIA DE CHILE

The president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, has described this Wednesday the local elections in Nicaragua as an electoral process «without freedom», stressing the importance of restoring «democratic guarantees and freedoms» in the country.

«On Sunday municipal elections were held in Nicaragua. An electoral process that takes place without freedom, reliable electoral justice and imprisoned or banned opponents is not democracy anywhere in the world,» said the Chilean president in a message on his Twitter account.

Boric has highlighted his intention to promote in international summits the need to guarantee in Nicaragua the «reestablishment» of democratic guarantees and freedoms «proper of a State of law».

Likewise, he has asserted that he will promote the way to put an end in the Central American state to «all attacks against opponents».

Last Sunday, November 6, the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) of President Daniel Ortega obtained 100 percent of the Nicaraguan mayorships in municipal elections marked by the absence of opposition parties, which are vetoed by the courts.

The opposition has described the elections as an «electoral farce», although the Executive has tried to defend the result by pointing to a high turnout. However, the independent organization Urnas Abiertas reported an abstention rate of 82.67 percent and a turnout of 17.33 percent.
