Russian Ambassador to Poland Sergei Andreyev has called the Polish government’s decision to build a fence on the border with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad in response to the invasion of Ukraine, which began in late February, «absurd.»
«The fence that has begun to be built on the border with the Kaliningrad region is the continuation of the construction of barriers on the Polish borders already not only with Russia but also with Belarus. This idea is absurd but anything today that is anti-Russian sells well in Poland,» he said in statements picked up by Channel 1 Russia.
Polish authorities, for their part, have indicated that there is a need to build the fence «because of the threat from the Kaliningrad area. However, Andreyev has lashed out at the Polish argument, which is based on the idea that the recent opening of the Kaliningrad international airport will allow migrants to enter Poland and, subsequently, other EU countries.
Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Baszczak has reported that construction of a temporary fence has already begun in the area and explained that the decision is due to Russia’s launch of international flights with countries in the Middle East and North Africa.
