U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken will travel to Qatar to meet with local authorities and attend the U.S. national team’s first game in the World Cup, with the aim of recognizing the country’s «important contribution» to «sports diplomacy.»
The head of U.S. diplomacy will arrive in Qatar on Monday to inaugurate the fifth bilateral Strategic Dialogue. During his two-day visit, he is scheduled to meet with a number of senior officials, including the Qatari foreign minister, with whom he will underline the current relationship.
The State Department explained in a statement that Blinken will address a series of «priorities», among which Washington has included «labor and human rights», in a context in which international organizations have focused precisely on the abuses that are committed in a generalized manner against certain sectors or groups taking advantage of the World Cup.
