The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, revealed Saturday that he voted in favor of the reinstatement of the Twitter account of former U.S. President Donald Trump in a poll opened by the owner of the social network, Elon Musk.
«I already voted in favor of Trump being able to use Twitter. The Statue of Liberty should not remain an empty symbol,» said López Obrador in reference to Trump’s veto on Twitter.
Musk opened the poll on Friday and since then nearly 52 percent of participants have backed the reinstatement, while 47 percent have voted against it.
The account was suspended following the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on Capitol Hill by a mob of Trump supporters who wanted to prevent the confirmation of Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election on the grounds of fraud. Twitter considered that Trump had instigated his supporters to perpetrate violent acts.
