The Russian authorities have assured on Monday that they will actively search for those responsible for the alleged executions of Russian prisoners of war in Ukraine, unveiled last Friday.
«Russia will do everything possible within the framework of international mechanisms to draw attention to this crime and call to order and law those who may be involved,» Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
In this regard, he has acknowledged that Moscow will turn to international bodies only in case there is evidence of «effectiveness» on the part of these organizations. «Otherwise, it will be meaningless,» Peskov said, according to TASS.
Thus, although Russia called on international bodies to condemn the alleged execution of Russian prisoners of war, it is now wary that these organizations will deal thoroughly with what happened and take Moscow’s side.
Russia’s Justice Ministry already warned on Friday that both Ukraine’s President Volodimir Zelensky and «his henchmen» should be held accountable for the alleged execution of Russian prisoners of war at the hands of Ukrainian soldiers.
«Zelensky and his henchmen will have to answer before the court of history, the peoples of Russia and Ukraine for each and every one of the tortured and murdered prisoners,» the Justice Ministry said in a statement.
The Russian Defense Ministry last week accused the Ukrainian military of the execution of at least a dozen prisoners of war captured in images that it denounced as a «methodical and intentional murder».
