Death toll rises to 318 in Indonesian earthquake

The death toll from last Monday’s earthquake in Indonesia has now reached 318 people, while 14 others remain missing, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said in a statement shared on Saturday.

The latest lifeless bodies found correspond to eight people reported missing after the earthquake that has left a total of 7,729 people injured, 545 of whom have been severely injured in the aftermath. According to the latest report, 108 people remain in treatment for serious injuries.

In addition, the earthquake has left 73,693 residents displaced, so the BNP together with the Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection and the United Nations Population Fund have launched a survey to determine the distribution of age, gender and number of people from vulnerable groups have been affected.

The authorities have shared that the disaggregated data shows that the number of women is higher (25,974), compared to 20,002 men, while 65 people have some kind of disability.

This Saturday, the BNPB also reported that it has deployed motorcycles to contribute to logistical work in hard-to-reach areas to deliver basic necessities such as blankets, mattresses and electric generators, among others.

The earthquake occurred on Monday at 13.21 hours (local time), with its epicenter ten kilometers south of Cianjur, according to the Indonesian National Meteorological, Geophysical and Climatological Agency (BMKG), which ruled out the risk of tsunami. For its part, the BNPB confirmed that the earthquake had shaken the capital, Jakarta.
