The death toll from a landslide on the Italian island of Ischia in the Gulf of Naples, where a state of emergency has been declared, has risen to five, including a newborn baby, according to the latest data provided by rescue teams.

Rescuers had previously found the body of a five- or six-year-old girl in a bedroom inside a collapsed building after the landslide caused by torrential rains in the municipality of Casamicciola Terme.

Another fatality has been an elderly woman whose identity has not yet been determined, and who has been transferred to the morgue of the Rizzoli hospital, reports ‘Il Messaggero’. Another of the deceased has been identified as a teenager.

The first fatality of the landslide was identified on Saturday as a 31-year-old woman. There are now seven missing, including the woman’s husband, and four injured, one of them seriously.

The Minister of Civil Protection and Marine Policies, Nello Musumeci, has confirmed after an extraordinary Council of Ministers following the disaster that the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, will travel in the coming days to the affected area, as reported by the newspaper ‘Corriere della Sera’.

The Italian authorities have decreed a state of emergency for Ischia, as well as an allocation of two million euros to help the affected region, where more than 160 people have been displaced from their homes.

Among the missing, as reported by the prefect of Naples Claudio Palomba, there are two families, one of which is a married couple with three children, and a Bulgarian migrant with Italian nationality, as reported by the Adnkronos news agency.
