Judge Roberto Elías Martínez, who was shot twice in the head on Saturday morning in Zacatecas, Mexico, died on Sunday morning.
The president magistrate of the Judicial Power of Zacatecas, Arturo Nahle García, has confirmed the death of Martínez, who was shot as he left his home in the municipality of Guadalupe.
«The Zacatecas Court is in mourning. A few minutes ago one of its most competent judges, committed to the high value of justice, passed away. The murder of Judge Roberto Elías Martínez outrages us and adds to the desperate call for peace in Zacatecas. We embrace his family,» Nahle posted on Twitter.
Nahle has pointed out in statements to ‘El Universal’ that «in the Judiciary we are outraged» and recalled that more than 100 judges have died. «An attack on a judge is an attack on the entire Judicial Branch and in those terms we are all expressing ourselves,» she said.
According to Nahle «there was no prior knowledge that the judge had received any threat, since his colleagues in the Control Court, located in the municipality of Río Grande, as well as his family, were also consulted, but no one knew of any threat».
They have also reviewed the last cases in which he has worked, but «they have not found any indication that he was killed for this case, therefore, the motive is unknown and we do not know what could have happened».
The investigation is the responsibility of the Attorney General’s Office of Zacatecas, to which Nahle demands that the case be clarified and not go unpunished.
